FOTD: Strawberry Fields Forever
by Kailey

Two of my favorite drugstore brands, Maybelline and Revlon, are 40% off right now at Ulta, so it gave me the perfect excuse to spotlight some of my favorite products by them!

Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream
What I wear when I’m too lazy to put on foundation, this bb cream is dewy without looking oily and has an SPF 30!

Revlon Matte Lipstick in Really Red
Here I’m wearing Really Red, a gorgeous strawberry red, and paired it with Maybelline Color Elixir Lip Color in Signature Scarlet for a glossy finish. I’m kind of obsessed with the lip elixirs and just might be taking advantage of the sale to get more… *cough*

Also wearing: NYX Liquid Black Liner, NYX ‘Milk’ Jumbo Pencil

I'm coming over to new york from the uk next week and was wondering if there were any drugstore brands/products I should def check out? Feeling pretty overwhelmed by the amount of stuff on offer! Thank you in advance you are both angels xo

Sure thing! It depends on what drugstore you’re in, if you can get to an ULTA while you’re visiting, definitely go there because there will be more brand selection from both drugstore to luxury brands and they’ll have harder to locate products. Keep an eye out for NYX, Milani, Wet n’ Wild, Revlon and Maybelline specifically. Here are some products we’re both way into right now:

Eyes Wise: The drugstore creem eyeshadows are definitely interesting — pick up some L’Oreal ones, and try out Wet n’ Wild 6-pan eyeshadow palettes, too. Wet n’ Wild also has great, cheap liquid eyeliner, as does Milani. And L’Oreal has some great mascaras.

Cheek Wise: Skipping foundation because neither of us are fans of any drugstore base makeup products at the moment (our faces, unfortunately, break out whenever we try any new formulations from the drugstore…). However, there are plenty of nice blushes and bronzers. Keep an eye out for Maybelline Limited Edition Baked Blushes and grab ‘em if you can, and if you see a NYX stand — definitely grab up some blushes.

Lips Wise: There are so many great drugstore lipsticks out right now, really you’d be hard pressed to find a poor formulation. I find myself most loyal to Revlon colors, but Wet n’ Wild has stepped up their lipstick game too, and there are a bunch of new Maybelline colors released because of summer. So honestly, try out whatever you want!! I Here are some of our longtime favorites.

Other shenanigans: Here are other random stuff that you should be on the lookout for — all are favorites, comparable to high end counterparts.
Whew! Hope that helped!  Have a nice visit in the U.S.A my friend.

WoooOOOwwww an actual FOTD!!!! It’s only been… an embarrassingly long time. Anyway, this is the makeup I did for my graduation ceremony for a university program. I could have done a totally respectable neutral smokey eye, but I do that every day and I wanted to use makeup products I haven’t used in awhile. It ended up being yet another version of my Lady Vengeance obsession.

*Means these products were not purchased by me, but sent for editorial consideration. This doesn’t impact how I feel about the products though — honesty first!

Quick FOTD — I decided to mimic the eyeliner method Lisa Eldridge used in her latest video (she’s kind of the patron saint of powder doom, we both love her TO THE END OF TIME). I don’t really do makeup like this very often, but I think it came out quite nice.
Here’s what I used:

Nothing new here, really — I guess this is the first time I’ve worn Siren (the lipgloss) on PD though! It’s fantastic isn’t it?! I sprayed over everything with Mario Badescu’s Aloe Vera Spray and I’m in love, it really moisturizing and brightens up the face and makes it less…. ”done”. I’m a fan. My eyeshadow is just a mixture of Wet n’ Wild and Urban Decay shades from the previous Holiday collection and 50th anniversary palette, respectively, but the Naked palette should have similar colors.  High-res

I didn’t realize how many brushes I had until I finally organized them into an acrylic storage cube I got at the Container Store last weekend ($9.99). Though I have quite a few, I’ve never spent a lot of money on any one brush, these are all E.LF, EcoTools, NYX, and Real Techniques with the exception of one or two that I received as gifts. You don’t need to spend a lot of money to get quality brushes!

Second part of my Most Worn Summer Products Tag, the makeup part! As I said before, I have really pared down my makeup collection for my overseas trip. We never really do monthly favorites here because we’re both really boring and don’t revolve favorites really, our favorites have earned their titles after rigorous testing and they are seldom knocked from their pedastels. I don’t trust people who have have a new Best Product Ever every week because I think it’s hard to gauge how great a product works unless you’ve been using it for more than well.. a week. Enough ranting:
Wet n Wild Color Icon Palette “Baked, not Fried” $4.99 - Review & Swatches Here - Such a great investment, I love this dearly and it’s given me a profound appreciation for neutrals. I’ve been wearing neutrals a lot this summer, and this palette is a godsend. Very glad I purchased it when I could. I prefer it over my Naked 2 Palette honestly, the N2 is a bit too cold for me, but this matches my skin great.
L’Oreal True Match Powder in Classic Ivory $8.99 - I have 3 or 4 other powders at home, but I use this pretty much exclusively. Nothing much to write home about, it blots up the oil, finishes up any makeup I put on and I only reapply once a day.
Dermablend Quick Fix Concealer $22 - Longtime PD readers will remember this (and a few other products here too) because it’s in every. single. favorites post I ever. do. Go read about it in the dermablend tag.
Dr. Jart+ Water Fuse BB SPF 25 PA++ $32 - Also a PD standby, you can read more about my feelings about it here. It’s my favorite BB cream, it provides coverage and moisturizes more than others I’ve tried and is just the  best ever.
Maybelline 24 Hr Color Tattoo Eyeshadow in Bad to the Bronze - Review & Swatches Here - Really, really love this, I have a more bold color from this line but I think the all over application I tend to do with this kind of eyeshadow (kind of creamy…ish, like MAC paint pots) lends itself better to neutral shades like this Bronze. I use it either on it’s own without primer, or as primer with my Wet n’ Wild eyeshadow shades.
Urban Decay 24/7 Liquid Eyeliner in Perversion $19 - Also a longtime PD favorite. I’ve just purchased a different eyeliner in Asia though because while I love this forever, I’m getting tired of wrenching it open because after a few months it just doesn’t close 100%. It’s still wet, black, and wonderful, but opening it is a pain. I’m trying out some felt tip pens at the moment.
Revlon Lip Butter in Lollipop $7.49 - Chi-Chi has fawned over the Lip Butters on PD numerous occasions, here and here are her swatches. I’m pretty sure she has almost all of the colors???! I only have this one but I’ll pick up another one soon, I really like this one. It is super moisturizing and adds a pop of color. I’m not usually a fan of lippies with a little shimmer but I’m surprisingly fond of this.

Hi PD~! This is an unfortunately belated review for the NYX Jumbo Pencils I purchased quite a while ago from Ulta. The NYX Jumbo Pencils in Bronze (620), Pure Gold (621A), Electric Blue (622A) and Milk (604) (at Ulta | ~$4 to $5) are described as easy-to-use, creamy and blendable eye pencils that can both be used as an eyeliner and an eyeshadow. In my experience, it excels in some areas and comes up short in others. (^v^) (^u^) (^◇^)

One thing I don’t particularly like about this packaging is how flimsy the cap for the pencil is. I remember when I was shopping for these products, almost all of the caps had tiny cracks in them in store. Besides, I don’t grab for these a lot and they still all broke. :C Maybe it was a bad batch but it would be nice if it was studier plastic.

Above, I took swatches in both direct sunlight and with flash. …they’re so pretty! Milk is amazing as a base color for pressed or loose eyeshadow colors you really want to be vibrant.

What I like about the Jumbo Pencils:

  • Great color variety at a good price point - perfect for someone who is trying to build their makeup collection without breaking the bank
  • Makes a great base for eyeshadows - especially Milk as I mentioned before
  • Blendable and creamy - to use it as an eyeliner, I usually use a flat eyeliner brush with the product and it’s easy to use it in that manner

What I don’t like about the Jumbo Pencils:

  • Will crease on oily lids - there is no two ways about it, if you don’t use a primer before using this product, it will crease within two to three hours if you have oily lids
  • Can smudge and/or transfer - again, this might be a oily lid only plight, but if the product does not have time to set, it can smudge and transfer around the eye area. also, it does not work as a waterline/undereye eyeliner. at all. no staying power in my experience.

A couple things to consider:

  • You’ll have to buy a pencil sharpener that has a ‘jumbo’ hole so you can sharpen the pencils. The sharpeners are easy to find and purchase - NYX sells a sharpener for example.
  • To minimize product waste, try freezing/chilling the pencils before sharpening.

Do I recommend the NYX Jumbo Eye Pencils? Absolutely! Even with the noticeable shortcomings of the product, I still think that for the price, they are a great deal and an easy way to introduce new colors and textures into anyone’s makeup collection. (I am interested in the Milani version of these pencils though…I’ve heard that the staying power and pigmentation on those pencils are amazing, on par or even better than the NYX pencils. :O )

how do you feel about nyx round lipsticks?

We like them very much, check the NYX tag. My personal favorite ones are Paris, Eros, Femme, and Chloe.
