Favorite Concealers - Drugstore & Otherwise

One of the most common questions we get is about concealers so I thought I’d do a quick roundup of our favorites. Chi-Chi and I both use mid-range to high end face products, so there is only one drugstore concealer here, but it’s quite a nice one and holds it’s own against concealers twice or even three times the cost. Here they are, for your perusal:

Honorable mentions: Eve Pearl Salmon Concealer (specifically for under-eye area) as well as the Graftobian Concealer palettes (a comparable, and more affordable version of the MUFE palette — it’s just harder to find, which is why it’s not included in the roundup).

Actually, if you want to invest in any concealer palettes for your kit or otherwise, I think Graftobian is the way to go. They have so many different ones depending on your shade range and if you want to color correct or specifically conceal, it’s pretty great. It’s also cheaper than the MUFE one, although I don’t know if the shipping costs would cancel that out.

So! What concealers are your faves? Drugstore recommendations? Have you tried these and utterly loathed them? Let us know in the comments (we have DISQUS enabled).

Hello darlings! I wanted to share some of my favorites that I’ve purchased relatively recently - new products are wonderful y/y?
OPI Natural Nail Strengthener | $9: This is the saving grace of my nails - my nails are quite fragile and soft, and this product has made strong enough to grow consistently!
Avon Ultra Luxury Eye Liner in Black Flash | $6: This is rivaling my love for the Tarina Tarantino liners mentioned here - creamy, takes a bit to set, does not move on my oily lids. Very black and quite shiny (Avon should make a matte version - would purchase!)
Revlon Nearly Naked Pressed Powder in Deep | $9.99: This is a wonderful, soft powder that sets most of my foundations nicely, including my cream and liquid foundations.
Wet n Wild Fergie Eyeshadow Primer | $4.99: Pretty much this is the only eyeshadow primer other than NARS Pro Prime Smudgeproof Base that works on my oily lids. Has the consistency similar to that of UDPP (but works better because UDPP does nothing for me).
Make Up For Ever Full Cover Concealer in Dark Beige (12) | $32: This concealer is hard to work with under the eyes; however, it does not move on after it sets until you want it to move. I’m…in love.
Maybelline Blush in Coral Burst (from the Spring 2013 LE collection): I saw Muse’s review of this blush and determined that I must have it because it looked absolutely beautiful. Then I bought it and it exceeded expectations so I went back and bought a backup. i regret nothing

I have been pretty good with resisting all of the new drugstore collections that have been coming out recently, but I finished some products and cleaned out my collection a tad (tossing old products and giving some away). My skin has not been doing too hot as of late as well, so I’m returning to some old favorites and simplifying it again. The products I bought include:
My Beauty Diary All-in-One Set (Pink) 15pcs + 1 Eye Mask | link: I splurged a bit and bought this because my skin has been acting up as I said, and these masks have always helped my skin return to normal. I absolutely love these and so does Arabelle. There are different masks for everything!
Naruko Perfecting Elixir | link: I used this a ton over a year ago after seeing how much fuzkittie liked Naruko products (;_;7 fuzkittie) and it completely changed my skin. I am in need of a skin savior right now so I purchased it again and I’m questioning why I ever stopped - this is the perfect night moisturizer for my skin right now. It consists of mostly rosehip oil (plus other good ingredients), which provide deep hydration for the skin. love love love it!
Kate Moss for Rimmel Lasting Finish Matte Lipstick in 104: This is a medium pink toned lipstick that turns into a pink-toned beige nude on my lips. Same great formula and lasts for four hours on the lips.
Wet n Wild Fergie Centerstage Collection Perfect Pout Lip Color in Penthouse Sweet (A036) | link: Mentioned in this post that I would probably get a couple more lipsticks from both this collection and the Rimmel Kate Moss collection, and well. It’s bright pink! Couldn’t resist..
Revlon Nearly Naked Makeup SPF 20 in Caramel (260) | link: Decided to jump on the hype train and see what this was all about after finishing my Estee Lauder foundation. Tried it for the first time and my first impressions are: it really feels like nothing on the skin, medium coverage at most if applied carefully and why is there no pump?! Will this be the drugstore foundation I feel comfortable recommending - only time will tell.
Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eraser Dark Spot Concealer + Treatment in Medium/Deep | link: I’m on the lookout for a new concealer since the Bobbi Brown one that I’ve been using is not working for my skin anymore. This is technically for dark spots (hence the name) but I’ll try it as an under-eye concealer and see how I like it. Also going to pick up the new L’oreal stick concealer eventually. (Update: This product is okay, both as an under-eye concealer and spot concealer. I can’t comment on the treatment part of the concealer since I haven’t been using it for long enough for that to have an affect yet. As a concealer, it’s either good or bad - merely okay and it’s not something to rush out for in the slightest.)

Products I have been liking/What I’ve purchased recently
Ohai PD! Since the semester started, I have put most of my beauty hauls and purchases on hold because uni is expensive, so I’ve started to ‘shop my collection’ and spend less than 10 dollars on beauty every two weeks. …surprisingly easier than expected and I’ve been finishing products left and right. I finally finished another one of my base products so I’ve started to use the L’Oreal Lumi foundation, which I will be doing a full review on when I’ve used it for a longer period of time. Speaking of my collection, I’ve never actually taken pictures of it…hm. Maybe another time. Anyway! Onto my recent likes and things I’ve purchased (semi)recently.
Bobbi Brown Sheer Finish Loose Powder in Golden Orange | $36: I actually got this because the nicest person ever who sold me my Bobbi Brown Tinted Moisturizer gave me one of her unopened testers. Fast forward a year, I opened it and fell in love (why is it the expensive things I fall in love with most of the time really). Up until recently, I set my foundation with the MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural and liked it for the most part, but I found that it does start to look cakey and I would get oily regardless. With this loose powder, it does not look cakey, it feels very light on the skin and I get oily around hour 11 instead of three hours after applying my foundation.
Rimmel Lasting Finish Lipstick - Kate Moss Collection in 06 | $4.99-$7.99: I know I said that I do not need any lip products for a very long time, but I met the nicest couponers when I was in CVS one night and we bonded over the fact that American BB Creams are horrible and they gave me coupons so I got it for $1.99. Could not resist and I am so happy that I caved in to the pretty lipstick - this is one of my favorite drugstore lipsticks that I own. Completely opaque coverage with a great color for fall and decent lasting power - with minor drinking, it lasted for four and a half hours. It’s actually the lipstick I wore in this post and I feel especially awesome when wearing it. I think Rimmel lipsticks get overlooked when it comes to their formula, and I completely recommend this lipstick.
YSL Rouge Pur Couture Vernis à Lèvres Glossy Stain in No. 11 Rouge Gouache | $32: Continuing with the lip products, I actually did a full review on this product previously here. Pretty much I may have forgotten I owned this product, used it again recently and remembered why I adored this product. Wore it at work the other day and had five people complement me on my lips. Great fall red yes/yes?
Wet n Wild MegaLast Salon Nail Color in Bite the Bullet (207B) | $1.99: I got this polish for free because CVS had buy one get one free on all of their Wet n Wild products (purchased the Wet n Wild Crème Eyeliner - never tried it). I already own eight of these polishes and these are hands down my favorite drugstore formula, especially for the flat applicator brush. Opaque in two coats, and with a top coat, lasts on my nails for six days. And it’s cheap!
Koji Dolly Wink Liquid Eyeliner in Deep Black | $12-$17: This is my favorite black liquid eyeliner, and this semester has reminded me of that again because it’s easy to apply when half-asleep and running late for class. Just enough control to do a quick flick or cat eye but not too fine of an applicator that makes building a thick line tedious. I did a full review of this product previously here.
Maybelline Eye Studio Color Plush Silk Eyeshadow in Olive Martini (LE) | $9.99: After seeing one of my favorite YT gurus emilynoel83 rave about this quad, I decided I must own it. After using it a couple times, I’m torn. It swatches absolutely beautifully, but I found that building up the color on my lids to be a tad difficult, which is odd because I own the Give me Gold quad from the same line and those shadows apply beautifully. However, with a little bit of work, the colors look absolutely amazing on the lids and create a great smokey eye. If you can still find it, I recommend purchasing!
And that’s it! Next up, either a finished products post, mini products on blast post or a collection collage. Toodles~ o/ High-res

• Bobbi Brown Sheer Finish Loose Powder in Golden Orange | $36: I actually got this because the nicest person ever who sold me my Bobbi Brown Tinted Moisturizer gave me one of her unopened testers. This is Part 2 of my swatchfest for the Maybelline EyeStudio Color Tattoo 24Hr Eyeshadows - Part 1 is here. Part 1 included all of the limited edition shades, and this part includes all of the permanent range of colors.

These shades can be purchased almost anywhere Maybelline is sold, including major drugstores, Target and Walmart. I have had a couple of these for a while now, and the number one shade that I grab for is definitely Bad to the Bronze. It’s a great neutral wash of color with some shimmer, making it perfect for lazy school looks and easy work looks. Since the beginning of the semester, I have pretty much been wearing one of these all over the lid, tightlining my eyes, mascara on the top lashes and going. Super simple, pretty and the least amount of chance of dumping product into my eye because of sleepiness.

As for easy or hard to work with, the easiest to work with would definitely be Bad to the Bronze or Tough as Taupe. The hardest to work with is Fierce & Tangy; the color does not build up that prettily on the lip which makes me very sad. Pomegranate Punk is also difficult to work with since the color sometimes bunches up if you’re not careful when applying.

All in all, I recommend these products - I really like them, they’re very easy to use (depending on the color), and they make eyeshadow pop as well. (And they stay on longer that the MAC Paint Pots that I had. And they’re cheaper!)

Hi PD! This is Part 1 of my swatchfest for the Maybelline EyeStudio Color Tattoo 24Hr Eyeshadows. I own quite a bit of these, and after asking Arabelle, I decided to split the swatchfest into two categories, limited edition and permanent range. These shades are limited edition.

Most of these colors, namely every single one except the teal shade, are from the Maybelline Limited Edition Fall 2012 Fashion Week collection. I purchased these at Walgreens, but they have been seen Rite Aid, CVS and Walgreens, so definitely pick them up. You know me and neutrals, so I had to pick them all up because reasons. :| My favorite is definitely Mossy Green, which looks absolutely beautiful by itself on the lid or as a part of a awesome smokey eye. The teal shade is also limited edition (I don’t know if the collection of the four colors has a name) and can be found at Target.

Finally, as usual, took the swatches without primer and built up the product so you could truly see the colors. Rich Mahogany and Barely Beige took some work to build up the color, but Gold Shimmer, Mossy Green and Test my Teal were very easy to work with. Barely Beige is a great highlighting color, either popped in the inner corner of the eye or buffed out as a brow bone highlight. I completely recommend going to get the neutral shades if you’re trying to build your neutral collection (Test my Teal is a skip unless you really want that shade of teal). They are great basic colors and the green is beautiful and you should just own it anyway.

Happy shopping and the next part with the permanent collection is coming soon! Toodles~

A quick picture post featuring a couple things I recently picked up. I’m planning to do a L’Oreal Infallible Eyeshadow swatchfest…sometime in the future.

 • L’Oreal Infallible Eyeshadows in Gold Imperial (407), Pink Sapphire (405) and Gleaming Bronze (408) - These colors are from the L’Oreal Summer 2012 It’s Gold or Nothing At All collection - related post on Nouveau Cheap. They were BOGO50% off and I knew that I really liked the formula of these and I had coupons and the awesome cosmetics specialist had coupons so…I got the colors that I didn’t already own. The fallout is the only downside of these shadows in my opinion, but these seriously do not come off and they’re so pretty.
 • Maybelline EyeStudio Color Tattoo 24Hr Eyeshadow in Pomegranate Punk (30) | link - …there isn’t really an explanation for this. One of my friends recommended this color to me and I was like well I already have four colors what’s another one and I got it for two dollars.
 • Revlon ColorStay 16 Hour Eye Shadow Quad in Inspired (540) | link - When these were launched, this quad caught my eye because it was green/teal/blue and I love that color combination. I had a great coupon from Target so it ended up being $2.99. …admittedly I haven’t had the best experience with Revlon shadows, like the quads they discontinued that these are replacing, but I’m hoping that they retooled their formula.
 • Revlon Eyelash Curler | link - I am officially on the hunt for a new lash curler and I have decided to try every single drugstore curler I can find before looking into mid to high-end curlers. I would rather not spend a lot on at least one part of my beauty routine for once haha.

And as for the eye look in this post, I decided to use the Revlon quad to test out the quality and such…and for the most part I’m impressed! Using the sponge applicator provided in the quad, I used the upper right color (light blue) as my all over lid color (with the bottom left color - pale green - patted on top), the bottom right color (deep blue) as the crease/outer corner color and the upper left color (off-white) as the inner corner color and dragged it slightly down onto the bottom waterline.

Full disclosure - I used the NARS Smudgeproof Eyeshadow Base as my primer. With that said, I took these pictures at around 7:30 pm and I first did my makeup (no retouches) at 10:30 am. *slow nod* I’m liking the wear on these. And just a quick note, used L’Oreal Voluminous Million Lashes Waterproof Mascara in Black and Tarina Tarantino Hyperliner in Glamorous Thief.

Dat haul for under 35 dollars!
This is yet another Chi-Chi stepped into a drugstore and used coupons and in-store deals to get great savings (the sequel to this haul). The week I purchased all of this stuff, CVS had amazing in-store sales and for once there were tons of coupons that coincided perfectly with everything I was thinking of getting (and more). Again, thanks to Nouveau Cheap for alerting me to the majority of the sales that week. I’m serious, PD followers, one of the only blogs I will check everyday, and not just for deals. Anyway. I picked up…
Maybelline Fit Me! Liquid SPF 18 Foundation in Caramel 350 | link: I have heard tons of mixed reviews about this foundation, but I’ve wanted to try it for myself (and it ended up being a little less than 3 dollars). If I dislike, doesn’t hurt the wallet too bad, right? ;D (edit: I tried this foundation and I now completely understand the negative side of all of the reviews of this product. It starts out great for the first forty five minutes…and then within the second hour of wear it starts to melt off. Completely. …..three hours pass by and I can’t even tell I put anything on. And it wasn’t even humid when I tried it! So disappoint -_-)
Maybelline EyeStudio Color Tattoo 24Hr Eyeshadow in Fierce & Tangy (10) and Edgy Emerald (50) | link: I love my neutral ones and I wasn’t really planning on getting any other colors, but the combination of the deals, coupons and more ExtraCare dollars meant that I now have these two. I love orange so I am really excited. And emerald, blue and gold? Beautiful. I got both for a little over 10 dollars + $3 ExtraCare dollars!
Milani Liquif’Eye Metallic Eye Liner Pencil in Black (01) and Brown (05) | link: I have always wanted these pencils in my collection. They are some of the best drugstore eyeliners on the market right now (we posted our recommendations for drugstore eyeliners here) and I’m really excited! Both for 10 dollars so not too bad.
L’Oreal Voluminous Million Lashes Waterproof Mascara in Black (670) | link: I have always had great luck with L’Oreal mascaras, so I decided to try this formula. Got waterproof because my eyes are like Niagara Falls sometimes. It was on sale at CVS and there was a coupon so I got it for $4.99.
Wet n Wild LE Flora Collection: Okay this I did not really plan to get but I was about to leave and I looked up and I was like :OO LE Wet n Wild collection? I MUST PURCHASE. And there were two color sets to choose from so I got the one that included orange (do you see a theme here). It was $3.50 after coupons.
Moral of the story is, watch your circulars and clip those coupons!! And enjoy your savings. Happy hauling PD and as always, drop an ask if you want additional pictures or a review. High-res

From the last couple of weeks. Shopped the CVS clearance sale, Redplum had amazing Maybelline coupons a bit ago and the Tarte blush? …I just wanted it.
