GET THE LOOK: Mary Kate Olsen at the 2011 MET Gala
Guest Post for Powder Doom by Coco
Mary Kate Olsen’s makeup at the 2011 MET Gala has been a favorite of mine for a long time. I decided to recreate it and share with you a few tips for wearing red eyeshadow. I know it’s a color that intimidates many makeup wearers.
I love everything about her look. There’s a “rule” about not matching your eyeshadow to your dress but I think it just works when it comes to red. Mary Kate and I obviously have extremely different complexions and features, but the essence that I really wanted to capture was the glowing appearance of her skin.
The key to wearing red makeup (be it on the eyes, lips or both) is to remove all the redness from your face. Use a medium coverage foundation and concentrate on the cheeks and sides of the nose. Be sure to thoroughly conceal blemishes or else the red makeup will accentuate any remaining redness on your face and the overall look will be blotchy. To recreate the warmth on her skin, I used a matte bronzer and barely-there blush. Mary Kate’s face is matte so the blush used was matte as well.
Remember- just like any other eyeshadow, reds come in cool and warm undertones. Some lean towards raspberry and others are pure primary reds.
Mary Kate’s lip color is a yellow-based matte pink. I didn’t have anything exactly like it so I used MAC’s CremeCup which is a warm toned pink but it has some sheen.
